Sod Installation in East Texas: Which Grass, and When to Lay It

Sod gives you a finished lawn the same day. The two things that decide whether it survives are the grass you pick and the month you lay it. Here is how both work in East Texas.

Which grass actually suits East Texas

We sit in a humid subtropical belt with hot summers, mild winters and heavy clay soil. That rules out cool-season grasses and narrows the sensible choices to four.

The single biggest mistake we see is Bermuda laid under tree cover. It will look right for one season and thin out badly by the next. If a yard has real shade, St. Augustine or Zoysia is the honest answer even though Bermuda is cheaper.

The best time to lay sod here

Sod is more forgiving than seed, but timing still changes how hard the first month is.

• March to May. The strongest window overall, and the best time for Bermuda. Roots establish before summer heat.
• September to early November. Excellent for St. Augustine and Zoysia. Warm soil, easing air temperature, far less watering stress.
• June to August. Entirely possible, and we install through summer, but it demands serious watering. Bermuda handles it best.
• Deep winter. Sod can be laid on dormant ground and will hold, but it will not root until soil warms, so it stays vulnerable longer.

What proper installation involves

Sod laid straight onto unprepared ground is the most common reason a lawn fails in year one. The turf is only as good as what is underneath it.

1. Remove the old turf. Not mowing it low. Removing it, so the new roots meet soil rather than dead thatch.
2. Grade for drainage. Fall away from the house, and no low spots where water will stand. On clay this matters more than anywhere else.
3. Topsoil where needed. Heavy clay benefits from a layer that roots can actually get into.
4. Lay tight, stagger the seams. Like brickwork. Gaps dry out and become weed lines.
5. Roll it. This presses roots into contact with soil. Skipping it leaves air pockets, and air pockets kill turf.
6. Water immediately. Within the hour, not at the end of the day.

The first three weeks

• Week 1. Water daily, sometimes twice in real heat. The soil beneath should be damp, not just the blades.
• Week 2. Ease off slightly. Lift a corner: if it resists, roots are taking.
• Week 3. First mow, high, sharp blade. Move toward deeper, less frequent watering.
• Keep traffic off for the first fortnight where you can.

Why East Texas clay matters

Clay holds water. That helps new sod through its first weeks, and then works against you for the rest of the lawn's life, because water sits rather than draining. If a yard already puddles after rain, laying sod over it does not fix that. It puts expensive turf on top of a drainage problem, and the low spots will be the first to yellow.

Where that is the case, drainage should be sorted first. It is cheaper to do it before the sod than to lift the sod later.

Common questions

How soon can I walk on it?

Light use after about two weeks. Normal use, including children and dogs, after roughly a month once it has knitted down.

Sod or hydroseeding?

Sod if you want it finished now, the area is manageable, or you are selling. Hydroseeding if the lot is large, the budget matters more than the timeline, or you are controlling erosion on a slope.

Why is my new sod turning yellow at the edges?

Usually the seams drying out faster than the middle, which means either the pieces were not laid tight or the edges are not getting enough water. It is fixable if caught in the first week.

Do I need to fertilise straight away?

No. A starter fertiliser at installation is useful, then leave it alone until it has rooted. Feeding stressed, unrooted turf pushes top growth the roots cannot support.

Can you lay sod in summer in Texas?

Yes, and we do. It simply requires committed watering for the first two to three weeks. Bermuda copes best. If watering is going to be difficult, waiting for September is the better call and we will tell you so.
